• ***Update: I posted this again using the Flickr link. The morning of this post, I verified that it was working. I was notified later that it was not working again. That was all the motivation I needed for the SmugMug account. Hopefully all will go well there.***

Let's try this one again. I don't know what was going on with Flickr. In fact, I am debating getting a SmugMug account. Any pros and cons?

Today's Photo: Birthday Flowers

Have you ever taken a photo that you did not remember. I was looking through the archive the other day when I ran across this. These were flowers which my children gave to Mommy on her birthday. After seeing the photo, I began to vaguely remember the circumstances surrounding this photo. Sometimes, you can end up in some interesting spots just to get the shot you want. This one I happened to be standing on the table with the tripod to get it just right.

With the exception of the Flickr snafu, Saturday was a fairly productive day. I was able to make it to the car show, but not Old Car City USA. Sometimes you can't always get what you want.

Today's Photo: The Imax

I am not a 3d movie type of guy. Fortunately, I can see the effects, but it gives me a headache to watch it for a long time. I found that out at my first Imax visit. For me, I have to strain to hard.

This is the front of the Imax theater in downtown Chattanooga. The scenery on this side of downtown was not as cool as the art district or coolidge park. I guess not everything can be cool.

I was able to make it to the car show Saturday. It was not real big, but there were some cool cars there. I even found a '70 Chevelle. Too bad I couldn't take it home. Oh well. However, I thought this one was a well done modified VW. I know from experience that everyone sees things differently. It always makes me wonder what other people see?

I am usually pretty good about figuring out what things are. However, this was not one of those. I have no idea what it is supposed to represent or supposed to be. I found this sitting in front of the Hunter museum in the Art District of Chattanooga. Even though I have no idea what it was, I still thought it was pretty cool. This was kinda challenging because the concert ending River Rocks just finished on the roadway below this point and there were lots of people walking around. It is amazing what you can do with low light photography.

I found this car walking the miles of trails at Old Car City USA. I can't wait to make it back to this museum. I am thinking it needs to be a time when there is a dusting of snow on the ground. I can just see the added dimension it would give the photos. Do you ever imagine what a photo will look like before even leaving the house? I find I do this more and more often.

Okay. I bowed, just for a minute, to those who wished I would take more photos of the whole vehicle. Not to mention this one was kinda neat. I think all the parts were original. I don't know what model or year this one was. If you know, just shout it out. It was sitting all by it's lonesome with out an owner. So, I had to stop and visit, which of course included some photos of it. It is a bear to get the moving traffic out of the background on an HDR.

  • Today, November 11, is Veterans Day in the United States. I would like to say thank you to all the men and women that have maintained the freedom that allow me to post what I want.

Today's Photo: Corsair

Ever since I was little, I have always been amazed with flight. I loved to watch birds gliding through the air, not to mention watching airplanes and all other manner of flying things. It is so hard to believe that just adjusting the way air flows over something can pull it into up into the air. Even though they fly, airplanes are still heavy, so to see some of these large planes hanging from the ceiling is a feat. It makes me wonder if they have ever had any accidents here.

This photo is of a Vought F4U Corsair. What an amazing aircraft. The speed and agility of this fighter made it a major factor in WWII. You can find this and many other aircraft at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum's Udar-Hazy Center.

I took this the other night with about a quarter moon. Just a little light from the moon gave it the extra umph I thought. For anyone who wants to try this, I shot it at ISO 3200, f 3.5, 18mm, 20 second exposure and then put it together with VirtualDub. Just before this I shot an HDR time lapse of the sunset. Talk about a bear to process.

I have always loved the Tennessee Aquarium. Situated in Downtown Chattanooga on the Tennessee River, this has been a great attraction for the city. It is amazing how much just having this has revived this area of Chattanooga.

When you enter the aquarium, you travel a very long escalator to the top of the building and then begin working you way down. The exhibit halls are around the outside of the building and there is a ramp around the inside of the building that goes by the large exhibits in the middle of the building. This was a very difficult shot because the lighting is very low. I did not have a tripod for this, just the handrail.

It is amazing the amount of work that is put into some of these classic cars. Most of the '57 Chevy and some of the others have Corvette engines in them. This was one of the most unique cars I saw at a local car show. In fact, this is one of the most unique I have seen at any of them I have been to. Surely, I don't have to point out the pretty mirrored underside of the hood. Just imagine the g-force this could bring to bear pushing you back into the seat.

  • I have not been paying attention to what meteor showers were coming up and then all the sudden, I was told that I needed to take a time lapse. The peak of the Leonid Meteor shower is at about midnight on the 17th. I set up the time lapse and was waiting to make sure it was taking the photos well when I saw one during the first exposure. Hopefully it will turn out and I will get more.

Today's Photo: The Guarded Gate

It only takes a few minutes browsing this site to find out that I am partial to HDR photos. If you dig hard enough you will find an occasional shot which has not been processed using the HDR technique. Most of the time, these photos start out being taken as bracketed sets with the intention of making an HDR. In fact, my standard operating procedure is to take three photos at a time with and exposure range from -2 to +2.

This photo was one of those I thought to make an HDR out of. However, during post processing, I thought it was much stronger as a single image processed without any HDR.

I love to shoot abandoned buildings. I have no fear of the dilapidated state of the construction, just of getting caught. When I was younger, I probably would have thought nothing of it. However, I am not so young anymore. This one, on the other hand, has been calling for years. It sits just beside the road and getting shots of the outside of the building are not so hard. I think it has become a skate park for most of the local kids. I haven't seen them there, but there are ramps built all over the inside. I found a place in Chattanooga that I really want to shoot and have been working on the research to go there legitimately. Hopefully that will happen soon.

  • I think Thanksgiving is a purely American holiday. If I am mistaken, please correct me. So, today starts the beginning of the holiday season. Lots of football (not the soccer type), food and festivities. So, for anyone celebrating Thanksgiving today...Happy Thanksgiving. To those not celebrating Thanksgiving...cook a turkey and call it thanksgiving.

Today's Photo: Henry House Hill

This is another photo in my "Silent Guns of the South" series. I have always been a student of history. There is so much to learn. I have been fortunate enough over the years to visit numerous battlefield sites, but unfortunately mos have been without a camera. This shot is from Henry House Hill located at the site of both the first and second battles of Manassas or Bull Run. At one point or another during both battles, each side had control of this hill and it is where a lot of fighting took place.

It is amazing how deceptive this shot can be. The wood lines are very close to where they were 150 years ago. From where this cannon is, it is only about 200 yards away. I can imagine that the soldiers standing here and at the tree line could see the whites of each other's eyes.

I have not had the time to dedicate to taking photos much lately. However, I was able to find the time to process a few that I had set aside a while back. This is another photo of the Windmill. Since this spring, I have been on a mission to remember to find the small things. Sometimes I have been better at this than others. However, I seem to get some pretty interesting results when I actually am paying attention to the small stuff. There are so many cool things to see while driving around the country side. It is nearly impossible to make it anywhere in any decent time when there are good clouds in the sky. Between the gates, barns and just plain old good scenery, I tend to get a good shot in every now and then. It is amazing what can be found within a few feet of the road.

I often wonder what it would have been like to live hundreds if not thousands of years ago. What would the world have been like with out the convenience we enjoy today. Instead of deciding what television show to watch or what fast food restaurant to eat at, it would be deciding where to set up a trap or how to farm. If you did not, you would not eat.

In the heart of the nations capital, Washington D.C., there is the Museum of Natural history. Part of the Smithsonian museums, it is home to dinosaurs, ocean creatures and the hope diamond. This shot is in the atrium of the museum where you are greeted by a very large elephant. Around this atrium, there are several levels and halls leading to wonderful history.

Surely by now you know I have a thing for classic cars. I love to go to car shows and see them all lined up. It's like going to Disneyworld. I can get my senses overloaded in a very short time and I don't have to go all over the place. However, sometimes I find the rare gem riding around all by it's lonesome or with only a couple of friends, like the Flamin' Chevy. This was one of those I found outside a local dining establishment. In fact, this used to be a Tasty Freeze, but I doubt there are many out there that remember it as such. Points to anyone who can name what it is now.

I had some trouble naming this photo. I ran across it several months ago and decided to stop for a quick shot. There is a green street light which was behind me that painted the trees that really cool color. When I was trying to name it, I made the mistake of asking my wife. She had no idea what to call it either, but she saw something I did not ... a star. No really, she saw a star in the shape of the clouds. It kinda made me mad because I am always the first one to point out stuff like that. Oh well, I can't win all the time, just most.

I love sunrise. It is so much fun to get up early, I am an early riser most of the time, get into place to take some morning shots and then watch the sun gradually warm the sky. I wish this had been from a recent sunrise outing, but all I have seen when passing this place lately is pitch black. I guess the trade off or the pitch black mornings is the ability to just about time sunset right. In fact, I was able to do just that yesterday. Hopefully, I will have some time to process them.

Of course it would not be a classic without the gate.

For anyone who has had the childhood dream of becoming and astronaut and especially for those who held that dream longer, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville Alabama is a must stop spot. The first thing that is noticed before even arriving at the space center is the massive Saturn V rocket towering over the complex. It is visible from miles away. This is the center of the Apollo Courtyard and the entrance to the space center. Around the courtyard are plaques for each of the Apollo missions. It is amazing to see the boot print of the astrounauts in the concrete in front of each of the plaques.

I am partial to classic cars from the 70's, but recently ran across this one. Of course I was too busy with the camera to find out the model of car. This seems to be a bad problem for me. I have been to some shows where the owners place a placard in the window of the car with the important information, or maybe I will become a car expert...or maybe not. Oh well. I was lucky that this one was on a pretty warm day.

Today's Photo: A Gate to Nowhere

This is another gate that I see kinda frequently. It does not have as much of a picturesque scene as some of the others in my area. However, occasionally, the clouds here can be quite pretty. I think it would be better if I could move the power lines out of the way, but I may get in trouble for that. I don't know. Anyone else out there tried that before?
